Three Men
Three men went upon the hillside
Whence from Pilate they had been tried
To the place of Golgotha
Who will you be, gentle reader?
Penitent thief or blasphemer?
Or the one who turned away?
One man looked upon our Savior
Saw His face and his demeanor
Cursing Him from his own cross
So the first to carry the cross
Threw it back to become his loss
Sadly for eternity
When we hold our cross and suffer
Will we have the strength to offer
All we have to Christ Our Lord
One man cried to Him for mercy
Knowing that his death was justly
Punishment for his own sins
Humble words of his confession
Lead to such a sweet profession
You will be with me today
When we face our final moment
Will He find our souls penitent
Begging for His forgiveness
One man forced to carry the wood
Dropping it as soon as he could
Then upon his way he went
Did he look upon this victim
Realizing that he helped to kill him
Bringing Him to Calvary
Will we lose rewards and graces
Not to see in others faces
Christ’s eyes looking back at us
Can we march the via crucis
Matching all our footfalls with His
Bearing our cross joyfully
Pray that when we walk beside Him
That we will not curse, deride Him
Staying with Him to the end
Who will you be, gentle reader
Penitent thief or blasphemer?
Or the one who turned away?
Whence from Pilate they had been tried
